It`s not unusual for Cuban cigars to sell for $1.1m – but Tom Jones is new guest
Cigar enthusiasts on Saturday paid more than $1.1m (£650,000) for six handmade Cuban humidors, at the gala closing of Havana’s 16th annual Cigar Festival.
The hot item was a one-of-a-kind handcrafted humidor packed with Montecristo cigars that fetched $235,000.
The Welsh crooner Tom Jones was among the celebrity invitees at the auction. He sang three songs for attending guests, including his signature tune, It’s Not Unusual. Jones, who was recently announced as a supporting act for Morrissey on a dates in California, said he had been smoking Cuban cigars since the 1960s, but had never visited the country before.
Officials said this week that sales of Cuban cigars rose 8% last year. Proceeds from the auction were to go to Cuba’s state-run healthcare system.
